Most people don’t realize how many bones, ligaments, and joints are located in the foot alone. To be specific, the human foot has 26 bones, with the heel being the largest of them all, multiple joints, and a network of over 100 ligaments, muscles, and tendons. When any of these variables adjust, it can cause a disruption in other areas of the foot, resulting in pain, including heel pain.

Heel pain can develop in the front, bottom, or back of the heel. Depending on the severity of the condition, heel pan can be severe enough to become disabling.

Plantar Fasciitis

Known as the most common causes of heel pain, Plantar Fasciitis is a condition in which the band of fibrous connective tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot to the heel, is stretched or sometimes torn. This leads to inflammation, pain and, in some circumstances, can result in bone spur development.

Heel Spurs

Heel spurs grow on the underside of the heel bone and can protrude up to a half an inch. They are caused by the stretching and straining of muscles and ligaments along the long band in the bottom of your foot.

Achilles Tendinitis

Inflammation in the Achilles tendon can lead to back heel pain. Typically, the initial inflammation of the Achilles tendon is caused by tight, strained tendons, similar to heel spurs. In some cases, this condition can even lead to heel spurs on the back of the heel.
